What you're actually dealing with

Lead doesn't come from the water. It comes from your pipes.

Here's the part most people miss: your water can leave the treatment plant perfectly clean and still pick up lead on the way to your glass. Old pipes, solder joints, brass fittings — anything between the street and your tap that contains lead can leach it into the water, especially if the water sits in the pipes overnight.

This is why utility reports can show "no lead detected" and your tap can still have it. The contamination happens after the test point. The only way to know is to test the water that actually comes out of your faucet — not the water at the plant.

Here's the problem

There is no risk-free level of lead. Period.

Unlike chlorine or hardness, lead doesn't have a "risk-free zone." Every major health authority agrees: the only truly risk-free amount is zero. The limits that exist aren't health targets — they're what regulators decided was practical to achieve. Tap each one to see how they compare.

Is there a risk-free level of lead in drinking water?

No major health authority considers any level of lead in drinking water truly risk-free. The WHO guideline of 10 µg/L is provisional and explicitly not health-based — they say concentrations should be kept as low as reasonably practical. The EU is moving to 5 µg/L by 2036.

Where does lead in tap water come from?

Lead typically enters water after it leaves the treatment plant — through old lead pipes, lead solder on copper joints, or brass fittings in your building's plumbing. The water itself may leave the plant clean, but pick up lead on the way to your tap.

How accurate is a home lead test kit?

A home lead test kit is a useful screening tool — if it detects lead, there is almost certainly lead present. However, a negative result does not guarantee absence. For exact levels in parts per billion, a lab test is the only way.

Can a filter remove lead from water?

Yes. Reverse osmosis systems and certain certified carbon filters can reduce lead to very low levels. For drinking water, an under-sink RO system is the most common solution. For whole-house protection, a point-of-entry system with UV and filtration is an option.
